In partnership with First Children's Finance and Families First of Minnesota, Child Care Aware, Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) invites you to bring a team from your community to learn more about addressing the child care crisis.
On a regular basis we are hearing about the need for child care in the region, especially infant & toddler care. This issue is becoming an economic development issue in many communities - creating family stress and placing burden on business and industry as they work to fill available job positions.
This session is open to anyone in SMIF’s 20-county region interested in potential solutions to alleviate the child care crisis – we highly encourage communities to bring a team of individuals and organizations interested in finding locally driven solutions to addressing the shortage. Suggestions of who to invite to be a part of your communities’ team include: Economic Development staff, city & county officials, employers, superintendents & school district early childhood staff, local child care providers or associations, parents and others in your community interested in addressing the shortage. | Jul 15 History Cruise: The Sea Wing Disaster |
| Go on a History Cruise with the Goodhue County Historical Society aboard the Pearl of the Lake! Travel the waters of Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River while learning about local history. The Sea Wing Disaster has been called by some “Minnesota’s Titanic”. The Sea Wing was a stern-wheeled steamer that originated in Diamond Bluff, Wisconsin. On July 13, 1890, it set sail for Camp Lakeview, just south of Lake City, with passengers from both sides of the river, mainly Red Wing. After a storm raised havoc on Lake City, the ship’s captain set the boat out into Lake Pepin as more storm clouds could be seen on the horizon. At 8:30 p.m., just off Central Point, the Sea Wing would capsize and the lake would claim 98 victims in all. To this day, the Sea Wing Disaster remains one of the worst inland water tragedies in the country. Historian Fred Johnson will narrate the cruise as we retrace the path of the Sea Wing on that fateful day. Copies of Fred Johnson’s book, The Sea Wing Disaster: Tragedy on Lake Pepin are available at the History Center or via our online store. Cost for the History Cruise is $25 per person. |

The public is invited to attend either event and provide feedback (the events are identical). Snacks and children’s activities are also provided.

League of Women Voters & Red Wing Chamber Host Meet the Candidates—July 26—6PM-7:30PM—Red Wing Public Library Foot Room
The LWV - Red Wing and the Red Wing Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a “Meet the Candidates” evening. Instead of formal speeches and moderated questions and answers, the LWV will be using a new format with the candidates rotating among small groups to allow voters to make a more direct connection with candidates. “With so many candidates and such a short time period before the primaries, this event is a valuable opportunity for people to hear from the candidates and ask their questions. We hope this format will help voters gather the information needed to elect the right person to represent them” said League co-chair Lisa Bayley. You will also be able to register to vote or check your voter registration before and after the event.
Fourteen candidates have filed to run. All 14 candidates have been invited to attend and we expect almost all to be present to meet the voters. The city council election is non-partisan, meaning candidates are not affiliated with a political party.
