| When cities make energy efficiency a priority amazing things can happen. For example, the City of Red Wing utilized renewable-energy grants and incentives to save 17,000 residents at least $1.1 million in future taxes. The city has made significant changes to maintenance and infrastructure including updates to the city hall, auditorium, library and the public works building. These changes have put Red Wing on the path to 100% renewable, sustainable, and resilient energy facilities. Jay McCleary and Rich Huelskamp will lead a workshop presentation and conversation with audiences to share stories of what is going on in the City of Red Wing, Goodhue County, and South East Minnesota. Participants will walk away with an understanding of the opportunities in Goodhue County in implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies for their homes or businesses. After this program, participants will be able to identify local and online resources for friends and families to fully understand the promises and problems of energy efficiency and renewable energy options as well as decide how to best manage energy use and become an active citizen to support changes to our local energy distribution systems of Goodhue County and South East Minnesota. We hope you will join us for this informative workshop and conversation! With 33 years of public service to the City of Red Wing, Jay McCleary was one of several civic leaders to accomplish the major energy efficiency and renewable energy projects throughout the city. Rich Huelskamp has over 40 years of supporting, educating, and assisting homeowners and business owners as well as Minnesota’s energy industry professionals. With a thorough understanding of residential thru industrial energy use building and equipment, Rich as evaluated, recommended, and verified building construction, mechanical/electrical equipment, and renewable energy systems. This program is free for members and students (with ID) and $5 for the general public. Rural Electrification in Goodhue County Today is in conjunction with the temporary exhibit Electrifying Minnesota on view at the Goodhue County History Center January 20 through April 29, 2018. |

The City of Red Wing is hosting a meeting regarding the proposed reconstruction project involving the intersection of 3rd Street and Bush Street and mid-block pedestrian crossing on 3rd Street by Jordan Court. Construction is scheduled for Summer 2018. MnDOT staff will also be in attendance to give an update on the upcoming construction at the 3rd Street/Plum Street intersection due to the new MN/WI bridge project. There will be NO special assessments for the 3rd Street/Bush Street and 3rd Street mid-block crossing projects (assessments for the bridge project cover the work occurring at 3rd Street & Plum Street). Mayor Dowse will introduce representatives from All Aboard Minnesota, a nonprofit group, who will speak on MnDOT’s plans to introduce a second daily train serving Red Wing on the current Twin Cities-Chicago route. Learn what the proposed service will look like, how it is being designed, and what it could mean for business growth in our city (hint… A LOT). The speaker will describe how the new train will differ from current Amtrak service, the schedule which is being proposed, and a time line for implementation. Other towns in the Midwest have experienced dramatic economic benefits from improved intercity train service, and several examples will be described and discussed. | This winter, we will offer a great lineup of classes in conjunction with Red Wing Community Education! To register for this class, please call Community Education at 651.385.4565. Are you like most genealogists? That is, do you have stacks of papers, files, certificates, census copies, and other items around your home? Do you panic when you have to find something or have to use the dining room table for a meal? Can you find what you need in your computer files? You can conquer this dilemma and will learn tips for regularly keeping on top of the organizing task, with both paper and software. No one can promise perfection, but this session will share many ideas to get you on your way, including tips from some professional genealogists. We will even discuss some “lazy day” methods to keep you on top of your filing. Paula Stuart-Warren will instruct this course at the Goodhue County History Center. Paula is a workaholic who loves her profession and loves to get others excited about their family history. Paula works full time in the area of genealogical and historical research, lecturing, consulting, and writing. She has been a Board-certified genealogist since 1988, passing the every-five-year renewal assessments by the national Board for Certification of Genealogists. She is a firm believer in continuing education for genealogy and strives to keep up-to-date by participating in national and local conferences, reading the publications of many genealogical and historical organizations and individuals both off and online. She completed the week-long U.S. National Institute of Genealogical Research held at the National Archives in Washington, DC. |

Don’t miss this night of fun and networking and a chance to “taste some of the best food that Red Wing has to offer!” If you haven’t attended before, here’s what to expect: the main level of the St. James Hotel will be filled with approximately 17-20 food vendors from around the area with samples of many savory delights! You go around and taste as many as you want for as long as you want…we guarantee you’ll go away with a full belly! And it’s a great chance to network with others! In addition, you’ll have the chance to win door prizes of $25 from each of the food vendors! Tickets are available from Chamber Ambassadors or at the Chamber office for $15 in advance, $25 day of event. This event historically sells out, so purchase your tickets early!
Plus, we are raising funds for the Red Wing Area Food Shelf during this event. Sign your business up for our “Businesses For Food Challenge!” We are challenging any businesses that want to participate to call the Chamber at 388-4719 or email frontdesk@redwingchamber.com and we will set out a large see-through jar with their business name and logo on it. Throughout the night we will encourage attendees to place money in the jars of any businesses with the understanding the business will match the funds in their jar at the end of the night (up to a $100 maximum). It’s a great way for the business community to earn some recognition and donate to a great cause in our area. Some businesses have requested their jars earlier so they could place them at their businesses and start getting collections now…if you want to do that, call the Chamber office at 651-388-4719 and we’ll deliver yours early. Last year the business community raised $2,594 at this event for the Red Wing Area Food Shelf which equates to four times that amount through purchasing through their food networks!
