Name: Alebrijes Exhibition: Building the Dream World
Date: May 10, 2025 - August 16, 2025
Event Description:
Experience the colorful, fantastical world of alebrijes and see how artists create these engaging creatures!

Anderson Center is pleased to partner with the Minnesota Latino Museum to present the exhibition Alebrijes: Building the Dream World. An alebrije is an imaginary creature that possesses elements from different animals. They originated in the 1930s from the vivid dreams of Mexico City artist Pedro Linares. You may have seen them in the 2017 Disney/Pixar film “Coco,” which increased their exposure in the United States.

This exhibition shows the work of four different artists, all of whom work in the tradition of cartoneros, or papier mache artists. See the creative process of artists who take dreams and make them larger-than-life, starting with colorful drawings before moving to 3-D models. The result is large-scale sculptures. This exhibition offers something for all ages. Alebrijes: Building the Dream World is on view from May 10 – August 16, 2025. Galleries are open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
